People of many faiths gathered today for the second annual Blessing of the Waves, including a hang-ten reverend, a body-surfing friar and a boogie-boarding Mormon. Their altar was the Surf City sand; their vestments this Sunday were board shorts and wetsuits.

A Tongan choir opened the ceremony with a foghorn blast from a conch shell and a hymn, "Kehe Keu Ofi Pe," or "Nearer My God to Thee." Many of the singers had lost loved ones to a tsunami that scoured the coast of the island nation last week.

The Blessing of the Waves event was in part a thanksgiving for the water that curled and foamed behind the speakers and in part a call for environmental responsibility. Donald Garrick, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, talked about the peace he finds on a boogie board and asked the audience to treat the ocean as a gift from God.
